Scifinder Scholar 2007

Notes

SciFinder Scholar can only be used on-campus. You can use this software on any IIT computer that has an IIT IP address.

In addition, IIT's subscription to SciFinder only allows for three simultaneous connections.
Please close your session of SciFinder when you are not using it.


General Installation Instructions

In order to use SciFinder Scholar:

  • You must install the SciFinder Scholar client software on your computer.
  • You must save the site.prf file in the same directory or folder as the SciFinder Scholar client software.
  • Read the user agreement carefully. This is a legally binding agreement that you will be required to abide by. CAS is known for monitoring usage closely.
The SciFinder Scholar client software is available for both Windows and Macintosh.

Windows Installation Instructions
  1. Download the client software SFS2007.exe (~12 MB) and save it to a temporary location, such as your desktop.
  2. Double-click on the "sfs2007.exe" file you just saved. This will install the SciFinder Scholar software on your computer.
  3. Follow the prompts to complete the software installation.
    At the question "Do you have a disk labeled Custom Site Files?" respond with "No".
  4. Install the site.prf file, and save it to the folder where SciFinder was just installed. This is usually C:\SFSCHLR.
    (Note: you must email reference@iit.edu to obtain this file -- provide your name and 8-digit Student ID (CWID) in the email, and we will send you the site.prf file)
After you have installed SciFinder Scholar on your computer, you will be able to use it by selecting SciFinder Scholar from your Windows Start menu.

If you want to use it along with the 3-D molecule viewer, you have to start the 3-D molecule viewer before you start SciFinder Scholar.

Macintosh Installation Instructions
  1. Download the client software sfs2007.dmg (~14 MB) and save it into a temporary folder..
  2. Unpack the .dmg file using a decompression program, such as "Stuff It Expander".
  3. Double-click on the "SciFinder Installer" icon.
  4. Install the site.prf file into your SciFinder Scholar folder.
    (Note: you must email reference@iit.edu to obtain this file -- provide your name and 8-digit Student ID (CWID) in the email, and we will send you the site.prf file)
After you have installed SciFinder Scholar on your computer, you will be able to use it by clicking on the SciFinder Scholar icon in your SciFinder Scholar folder.

Optional: 3D Molecule Viewer (ViewerLite 5.0)

The installation of this software is NOT required to search SciFinder Scholar.

ViewerLite 5.0 from Accelrys Inc. is a software tool for Windows users that allows you to view three dimensional structures of molecular models within SciFinder Scholar. Models can be rotated, scaled, edited, and labeled to provide better understanding of 3D structures.
  1. Close all other Windows applications and Anti-virus software.
  2. Installation may not proceed properly if other programs are running.
  3. Download the software ViewerLite50_4cas.exe (~5.64 MB) and save it to a temporary location, such as your desktop.
  4. Open Windows Explorer and double-click on the file that you have just saved. This will install the ViewerLite software on your computer. You must choose the default location of C:\Program Files\Accelrys\ViewerLite50. If you choose another location, SciFinder Scholar will not be able to locate the ViewerLite application.
  5. After you have installed ViewerLite on your computer, you will be able to use it by selecting Accelrys ViewerLite 5.0 from your Windows Start menu.
  6. Run the ViewerLite application once before using SciFinder Scholar. This gives the SciFinder Scholar program some information it needs to find the application. When the installation is successful, you will see an icon, , called "3D Model" appear in a SciFinder Scholar substance record.
