If you are trying to find a journal article for which you have a full citation, the best place to start is the library's Article Finder. Simply enter the article title, journal name, date, author(s), etc. and the Article Finder will search all of the library's holdings and return a link to the article if the library has access to it or a link to request the article by interlibrary loan.

To conduct a literature search, or to search for articles by topic, author, keyword, etc., the library provides a number of research databases. The most relevant databases for biomedical engineering are listed below. These are provided only as a guide to help you get started. The interdisciplinary nature of much of today's research means that relevant articles will be found in most of the library's databases regardless of specific subject specialization.

= highly recommended

Web of Science
The Web of Science provides seamless access to current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 8,700 of the most prestigious, high impact research journals in the world. Web of Science also provides a unique search method, cited reference searching. With it, users can navigate forward, backward, and through the literature, searching all disciplines and time spans to uncover all the information relevant to their research. Users can also navigate to electronic full-text journal articles. Available to registered IIT students, faculty, & staff both on-campus and through remote access.

SciFinder Scholar
SciFinder is the premier research tool for chemical, biological, biomedical, & related scientific information. It includes:

  • patent and journal references. Over 36 Million references to more than 9,000 scientific and technical journals from 1907 to the present.
  • substance information. More than 23 million organic and inorganic substances and more than 43 million sequences.
  • regulated chemicals. Provides information on more than 200,000 inventoried or regulated chemicals.
  • chemical reactions. Information about more than 8 million single- and multi-step reactions from 1840 to the present.
  • chemical supplier information. Provides information about more than 7 million commercially available chemicals and their worldwide suppliers.

To use SciFinder, you will need to download and install the client software on your local computer. The files and full instructions are available here. Available to registered IIT students, faculty, and staff on-campus only.

INSPEC
INSPEC, created by the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers), is the leading bibliographic database providing abstracts and indexing to the world's scientific and technical papers in physics, electrical engineering, electronics, communications, control engineering, computing, information technology, manufacturing, production and mechanical engineering. Containing over 8 million records, INSPEC provides coverage from over 3,400 journals, 2,000 conference proceedings as well as numerous books, dissertations and reports. In addition to the core subject areas, INSPEC also provides significant coverage in related disciplines such as materials science, oceanography, nuclear engineering, geophysics, biomedical engineering and many more. Available to registered IIT students, faculty, and staff both on-campus and through remote access.

Biological Abstracts
Biological Abstracts is a complete collection of bibliographic references covering life science and biomedical research literature published from more than 4,000 journals internationally. This database provides users with easy access to the latest information in virtually every life science discipline and contains nearly 7.7 million archival records from as far back as 1969, with more than 370,000 citations added each year. Most of the records include informative abstracts written by the author. It is produced by Thomson Scientific. Available to registered IIT students, faculty, and staff both on-campus and through remote access.

Biological Sciences
This interdisciplinary database offers abstracts and citations to a wide range of research in biomedicine, biotechnology, zoology and ecology, and some aspects of agriculture and veterinary science. Supporting over two dozen areas of expertise, this CSA database provides access to literature from over 6000 serials, as well as conference proceedings, technical reports, monographs and selected books and patents. Available to registered IIT students, faculty, and staff both on-campus and through remote access.

CSA Materials Research Database with METADEX
The CSA Materials Research Database with METADEX brings together in one place the majority of the leading materials science databases, with specialist content on materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, polymers, and composites used in engineering application. Everything from raw materials and refining through processing, welding and fabrication to end uses, corrosion, performance and recycling is covered in depth for all metals, alloys, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Sources covered include over 3,000 periodicals, conference proceedings, technical reports, trade journal/newsletter items, patents, books, and press releases. Available to registered IIT students, faculty, and staff both on-campus and through remote access.

MEDLINE
MEDLINE contains over 4 million citations and abstracts, providing unparalleled access to worldwide biomedical literature. The database contains a broad range of medical topics relating to research, clinical practice, administration, policy issues, and health care services. Produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE contains all records published in Index Medicus and since 2002, most citations previously included in separate NLM specialty databases such as SPACELINE and HISTLINE. Subject content includes anatomy; communication disorders; microbiology; paramedical professions; pathology; physiology; psychiatry; toxicology; dentistry; parasitology; reproductive biology; epidemiology; gene therapy; surgical and pharmaceutical intervention; nursing practice; ethical and legal issues; institutional operations; laboratory techniques and procedures; diagnosis and management; clinical research trials and experimental treatment protocols; legislation and regulation; allied health specialties; continuing education; investigational drugs and new drug uses, and some veterinary medicine. Available to registered IIT students, faculty, and staff both on-campus and through remote access.
