ASM
Handbook
The online edition of the ASM Handbook, 10th edition
(aka Metals Handbook). This 21 volume
reference collection covers the spectrum of ferrous
and non-ferrous alloys, from general properties to
testing, evaluation, and manufacturing techniques.
Full-text.
ASM
Alloy Center
The ASM Alloy Center enables you to search in one
easy step across ASM property data, performance
charts, and processing guidelines for specific
metals and alloys.
Full-text.
Compendex
Compendex is the most comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering
database in the world. Compendex contains over
9 million records and references over 5,000
international engineering sources including,
journal, conference and trade publications.
Coverage is from 1969 to present and the database is
updated weekly. Full-text not available – use the GetArticle links to find full-text.
Contrails
The Contrails website is a result of the
efforts of the Galvin Library's Government Documents Depository staff.
Over 1,000 technical reports issued by the United States Air Force have been
digitized and indexed in an online database. Contrails provides the
only online access available for many of these reports, which are scanned
at archival quality Coverage is the second half of the 20th century, with
most reports dating from the 1950's through the 1970's.
Full-text.
Materials
Research Database with METADEX
The CSA Materials Research Database with METADEX brings together in one place
the majority of the leading materials science databases, with specialist content
on materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, polymers, and composites used in
engineering application. Everything from raw materials and refining through
processing, welding and fabrication to end uses, corrosion, performance and
recycling is covered in depth for all metals, alloys, polymers, ceramics, and
composites. Sources covered include over 3,000 periodicals, conference
proceedings, technical reports, trade journal/newsletter items, patents, books,
and press releases. Full-text not available – use the GetArticle links to find full-text.
NASA Technical Reports
Server
The NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) provides access to 500,000
citations and 90,000 full image files in PDF format. The
collection covers the complete history of NASA and its forefather,
the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA), from 1915 to
forward, with full image coverage increasing with time. Many
of the technical reports for which there are no full image files are
held by Galvin Library in our Government Documents collection in
microfiche machine-readable format. The Government Documents
staff will cheerfully scan the technical reports IIT patrons' desire
from the 20th century microfiche format and provide you with a
digital PDF copy. Government Documents staff encourage IIT
patrons to
learn
how to make a scanning request. The Government Documents
collection also includes thousands of paper technical reports issued
by NASA. Please feel free to contact
Aric Ahrens should you have any
trouble locating materials published by NASA.
Some full-text available.
National Technical
Information Service
The National Technical Information Service is an
agency of the Department of commerce whose role is to distribute government
produced technical information to the public. NTIS operates in a revenue
neutral manner, similar to that of the Post Office, and therefore charges for
access to their documents. Some NTIS documents are also distributed in
paper or microfiche format to the Galvin Library due to its status as a
depository library. NTIS materials held by Galvin may be searched via the
IIT Catalog.
Galvin Library has access to two databases
from NTIS. The first is the
publicly accessible database, which provides only citation and
abstracts but no full-image files. The second database, called
Depository Access to Reports,
Technical and Scientific (DARTS), provides access to full-image
files that have been posted by NTIS as a result of a purchase
request by a customer. Both databases cover the period 1964
forward. Because the DARTS database only provides access to
digitized materials, the collection is a tiny fraction of the full
NTIS collection. DARTS is provided by the Department of
Commerce only to participating Depository libraries and requires a
Reference Librarian for a moderated login.
Some full-text available.
Public STINET
Public STINET provides access to technical reports from all three
branches of the military. Public STINET is particularly strong
in regards to aerospace technical reports issued by the United
States Air Force. Public STINET provides citation and some PDF
full-image access to unclassified reports only. Access to
Public STINET is provided by the
Defense Technical Information Center, which distributes
technical information to the military and their contractors in a
similar fashion to that employed by the National Technical
Information Service to distribute technical information to the
public. Full image access is scattered prior to the rise of
the Internet in the mid 1990's. Some reports which are
unavailable for download via Public STINET may be available via
IIT'S own
Contrails website. Also, requests may be placed for
scanning reports held by Contrails that have yet to be
digitized. Some full-text available.
Web of Science
Web of Science provides comprehensive indexing and abstracting of scientific journal literature from 1991-present. A main feature is the citation index, which allows you to see (a) all the references cited by the article, and (b) what other articles have cited the article. Links to related articles are provided. This is a good database to use if you have an article of interest and want to expand your search to related documents. Full-text not available – use the GetArticle links to find full-text.
