criteria.
Mathematics/Applied
Mathematics
American Mathematical Society (AMS)
http://www.ams.org/ Rating:
A (95/100)
Review: The site
highlights a broad range of services as well as books, journals, and
two large databases of mathematical information: Reviews
Mathematical, and MathSciNet. Of
special interest under the “Math on the Web” icon is the
preprint services. The site has a really great layout and is easy to
use.
arXiv e-Print Archive
http://arXiv.org/ Rating:
A (95/100)
Review:
A searchable database of research papers & preprints in physics
and mathematics. While primarily devoted to research in
physics, they offer a number of papers in mathematics as well.
Hosted by the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Electronic
Transactions on Numerical Analysis (ETNA)
http://www.maths.soton.ac.uk/EMIS/journals/ETNA/
Rating: A
(95/100)
Review:
This site is actually a full-text electronic journal for
"significant new and important developments in numerical
analysis and scientific computing." It is published twice
a year by the Kent State University Library in conjunction with the
Institute of Computational Mathematics at Kent State University. The
site makes it easy to browse the issues by year and provides keyword
search capabilities.
The European Mathematical Information
Service
http://www.emis.de
Review: This site contains a number of excellent
resources in all areas of mathematics. Of special note are the
five free databases, including Zentralblatt MATH, and a large
collection of free full-text resources.
International
Mathematical Union
http://www.mathunion.org/
Rating:
A (95/100)
Review:
There are a number of outstanding resources in
this site of international origin, including a fair amount written
in English. From
the homepage click on “Math-Net”, “Links” and then “Mathematical
Publications” in order to find collections of electronic journals
and pre-prints. There
is not a great deal of full-text articles; however, the potential
for finding what is needed in abstract form is very high.
Between the journals and preprints one could do a great deal
of initial research. Also,
from the homepage click on “Math-Net” and “General
Mathematics,” which links to universities and other sources on the
web for mathematical information.
The same information is indexed under the IMU Mirror listed
on the homepage. The
best place to start in this site is the “Math-Net” icon.
There are also collections of codes for solving mathematical
programming problems. The
site is very well done and is worth investigating.
Journal of
Integer Sequences
http://www.math.uwaterloo.ca/JIS/
Rating: A
(95/100)
Review:
This is an on-line journal devoted to the study of integer
sequences.
Mathematica
Review: A digital collection of historical works in
mathematics, from the Göttingen State and University Digital
Library.
Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
http://www.maa.org/ Rating: A
(95/100)
Review: The site is authored by an organization focused on
the teaching of collegiate mathematics. The site
features two search engines: one on the homepage and another located
at the bottom of the journals page. The journals icon
links to four journals and provides a link to the later of two
search engines. That engine searches articles published
in “Mathematics Magazine” and the “College Mathematics
Journal.” The site also features research, membership,
and book reviews. As of now there is no full-text
available on this site.
The
Mathematics Preprint Search System
http://mathnet.preprints.org/
Rating: A
(95/100)
Review:
This search tools allows the researcher to search several
mathematics pre-print & e-print servers from a single
interface. Searchable databases include Index national des prépublications et thèses en mathématiques en France,
JABaPub (Preprints from Austria and Bavaria), SINM-MPRESS (Preprints from Italy),
MathN / D-MathNet.preprints, Topology Atlas (Preprints related to topology),
xxx.lanl.gov e-Print archive (Mathematics part of the mirror at Augsburg),
Algebraic Number Theory Archives, K-theory Preprint Archives, & Preprints of the St. Petersburg Mathematical Society.
The
Mathematics Preprint Server
www.mathpreprints.com
Rating: A
(95/100)
Review:
The Mathematics Preprint Server is a free searchable database of
research papers & preprints in mathematics. In addition to
keyword and field searching, papers can be ranked and commented on
in discussion threads. Created and hosted by Elsevier Science.
Mathematics WWW
Virtual Library
http://euclid.math.fsu.edu/Science/math.html Rating:
B(85/100)
Review: The specialized field section lists a wide
variety of subject disciplines within mathematics. The
electronic journal and preprint listings are extensive and include
some full text. There are also full text math books and
bibliographies. The site has a good search engine, but
the best feature is the content.
MathSciNet
http://www.ams.org/mathscinet
Rating: A (95/100)
Review: Originating from the American Mathematical Society,
MathSciNet provides web access to articles from “Mathematical
Reviews” and “Current Mathematical Publications.”
1700 journals are reviewed by this source, and the search engine has
an incredibly large number of documents at its disposal.
Reviews include books, proceedings, and journals.
Society for Industrial and Applied
Mathematics (SIAM)
http://www.siam.org Rating:
A (95/100)
Review: SIAM is the premier organization for industrial
and applied mathematics with 12 journals to its credit.
The site features information about research-related activity
groups, journals, books, conferences, and news. The site
has a good layout and search engine is adequate; however, the fonts
throughout the site are too small.
