Plastics Institute
of America (PIA)
http://pia.caeds.eng.uml.edu/ Rating: B(85/100)
Review: The PIA is a non-profit organization whose interest
is research and education for the plastics industries.
The site features a range of services including membership,
training and seminars. The
site features a link to a plastics database which is a collection of
sites, which include PlasticNews, Plastics Technology (PLASPEC),
Polymeric Materials Related Resources – Cornell, and Polymer
Dotcom. These
sites offer a range of services from academic to commercial in
nature. The free
information leans more towards news and descriptive materials.
The remaining information is fee-based.
Score: 85 out of 100.
Society of Plastics Engineers
http://www.4spe.org/
Rating: B (85/100)
Review: The site links to publications, as well as industry,
education, and career-related services.
The technical journals are searchable, access is limited to
abstracts, and full-text available for a fee.
MatWeb
http://www.matweb.com/ Rating: A (90/100)
Review: MatWeb advertises itself as a database with over
24,000 materials: metals, plastics, ceramics and composites. The main use of this site for IIT is the ability for
one to search quickly for an item by material type, trade name,
manufacturer, property, and metal composition.
The site lends itself very well to locating polymeric/plastic
materials.

EEVL
- Edinburgh Engineering Virtual Library
http://www.eevl.ac.uk/ Rating:
A (100/100)
Review: EEVL is
maintained by information specialists throughout the UK.
The homepage is laid out for browsing by the engineering
topic of choice. There
are a large number of websites indexed by the search engine, which
allows for auto stemming and phrase search capabilities.
The site also features a current awareness service and access
to over 100 full text e-journals.
eFunda
– Engineerining Fundamentals
(formulas, constants, properties)
http://www.efunda.com/
Review: A
handy source for formulas and constants with information pertaining
to materials properties, processes and design.
Design content includes calculations for beams, stress
transforms, and principle stress.
The content leans towards mechanical but is useful to all
engineering disciplines. NOTE: eFunda has changed to a paid membership site. It now sets a cookie on your browser that limits you to about 5 minutes of free access. (Reviewed 10/26/07)
